The legal profession has long struggled with diversity and inclusion. While strides have been made, a recent white paper from Leopard Solutions, a SurePoint company, sheds light on the ongoing challenges faced by underrepresented attorneys in Big Law.  

The white paper “Diversity in Big Law: Aspirations, Challenges, and the Path Forward” analyzes data from a survey of diverse attorneys at leading law firms. The results paint a complex picture, revealing both these lawyers’ unwavering determination and the need for significant changes within the industry.  

Aspirations Remain High, Despite Challenges  

The survey found that a remarkable 64% of diverse lawyers entered their Am Law 200 firms with the goal of becoming partner, highlighting their ambition and commitment to success. This ambition remained strong even after facing challenges (86% of respondents are currently not partners).   

We further analyzed the reasons behind this discrepancy. Many respondents reported experiencing bias within their firms, which can create a culture that feels unwelcoming and hinders career advancement for diverse lawyers.  

Fostering a More Inclusive Environment  

Based on the survey findings and industry experts’ input, the report outlined vital areas that could combat the challenge of progressing diversity in law.  It emphasizes the importance of mentorship programs, sponsorship opportunities, and clear paths to partnership for diverse attorneys. Creating a culture of open communication and addressing microaggressions head-on are crucial steps toward building a more inclusive Big Law environment.

The report is a rallying call to action for law firms. By recognizing the challenges diverse lawyers face and actively working to create a more inclusive environment, Big Law can retain top talent and fulfill its ethical obligation to promote diversity within the legal profession.
